Embracing Advent
It’s the time of Advent in the Christian church, four weeks of expectation and preparation as we head toward Christmas. The word derives from the Latin adventus, “arrival” (Oxford English Dictionary), and heralds the celebration of the birth of Jesus as well as anticipates the future second coming. In other words, it’s all about the waiting. Have I mentioned that patience is not my strong suit?
Although I am a curious sort, I don’t much like surprises, don’t care to be caught off guard. I like to know. Got a bit of bad news? Let me have it. Now. Want to share a joyous announcement? Spill it, sister. Whatever you do, don’t make me wait. I’ve been known to cut off people in conversation, and I loathe unnecessary pauses. Filling up the space, and the silence, is what I do. But I’m hoping Advent 08 will help me change all that.
This year, I’m going to give Advent my best shot. I’m going to read a seasonal devotional each day, sit in the quiet, and reflect. That’s it. No sudden movements, no bold proclamations. Maybe if I can center myself in the present I won’t be so consumed with what comes next.
